Human Rights in Kakamega, Kenya!

The following are lines on the Project: Strengthening Democracy, Rule of Law and Human Rights in Kakamega County, Kenya (Matungu District, Khwisero District, Butere District and Mumias District).

How do we strengthen democracy, rule of law and understanding of human rights among the youth of Kakamega County?

Human rights and the rule of law are important in Kenya!

The word human rights is not a strange term to citizens of Kakamega yet it is the most ignored. This word often makes headlines especially in our Kenyan media signifying its misuse and neglect.

It’s important to state that most of our activist groups and NGOs promoting human rights and democracy are cantered in our capital city (Nairobi). We as a youth leader I appreciate the efforts by such organizations in promotion of human rights.

What is the Problem?

However, such forums created by these organizations capture elite Kenyans especially the higher and middle class, which are easily accessed to media. This is not true of the Kenyan population, which is largely lower class.

My wish is to turn such boardroom meetings in the city into seminars in the rural areas. The lack of enforcement of the rule of law in Kenya at large is the main obstacle in the struggle for equity and against poverty.

It’s a major cause of poverty in Kenya. Corruption and bribery are every-day facts that hinder socioeconomic development.

The authorities in Kenya continue to enjoy absolute impunity for all violations of political and economic rights and rule of law is denied throughout the country resulting in the collapse of individual economic life and leading to general poverty.

In Kenya, there is very low level of transparency with regard to the violations of human rights that take place in prisons, for instance, there is poor surveillance over the conduct of prison managers and the welfare of prisoners.

The lack of rule of law since is the main obstacle in the struggle for equity and against poverty. Under these circumstances, corruption and bribery are every-day facts that hinder socioeconomic development in Kenya.
